Tuesday, May 3 at Maison de Paix<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Today feels like Monday because yesterday was a holiday, so much so that the 140 children of our school, lined up in orderly rows, marched, sang the national anthem, and raised the country’s flag as is always done at the beginning of the week. Perhaps this reminds us of something from our national history… The Maison de Paix center is large and on several levels, so we are divided into working groups: there are 7 teachers engaged in the school, including three sisters\u2014two Bolivians, Estela and Gloria, and a young Congolese woman, Cristina\u2014then there is a Congolese postulant with the biblical name Abigael assisting, and three lay teachers: Tina, Irene, and Emanuel. We also held a pedagogical-didactic meeting with all of them, which they appreciated. We will hold another before we leave. There is satisfaction at the power station. The complex inverter systems we purchased in Italy and brought here in the container last year were activated today. Everything seems to be working after some concerns due to a wire not properly tightened at the factory. Our young Congolese collaborators were amazed to see that our volunteers were connected remotely with the company in San Benedetto del Tronto, which provided live assistance by viewing the operation of the equipment on their computer many kilometers away and giving information to our technicians by phone. Meanwhile, Papa Ton Ton, our permanent collaborator and father of 5 children, as well as the creator of a flourishing vegetable garden of which we are sending you a photo, is working to uproot the mango tree trunk we cut down yesterday. There are water and electrical pipes right next to it, and the plant’s roots are dangerous because they can damage them. The willing young people from the Focolare Movement are helping, and on this day of full sun\u2014fortunately also a bit windy\u2014they are making their contribution. Other young interns are at the volunteers’ house construction site making their active contribution as carpenters. Carl is reassembling the shelving to organize the last container. Yesterday’s work did not meet the standards of good execution and is being redone; we are here to learn to do things well, and we all depend on the good commitment of others. Then we all depend on the Lord, so praying in the morning, throughout the day, and in the evening is the true lifeblood of this collective action\u2014indeed, communal action. At this moment, the postulants have finished today’s religious formation with a good local priest who is truly very well prepared and skilled in teaching. While our volunteer technicians are preparing to climb back up this section of the roof to install the remaining 20 solar panels, I think of the rats living in the attic that wake us in the morning with very loud noises. We wonder if they go jogging in the morning. Unfortunately, Papa Jean, our longtime night guard, has put out poison to eliminate them. Either them or us\u2014the rainwater is for our use, and when we see them running on the zinc sheets and near the panel cables, we are concerned about hygiene and about them gnawing the wires, an experience we have already had here. We tolerate the birds, but the rats absolutely not. Scenes of ordinary administration here, but the mission is a beautiful mix of poetry and much prose. That is the beauty of it. Mbote a tous!
